Need help preparing your documents for use overseas?
Are you thinking of relocating to the UAE? If so, there’s a lot to deal with before you can actually make the move.
In the middle of sorting your accommodation, moving your belongings and arranging your transport, it’s easy to forget that your documents need to be just as prepared as you are! Did you know there’s an entire procedure that your documents have to go through before they’ll be accepted in the UAE? That process is known as Legalisation.
Legalisation is the act of preparing a document for use in another country, and is vital for you to be accepted for a visa and for you to actually start living and working in the UAE . To get your UK documents legalised, you’ll first need to get them certified by a solicitor, and have them sent them to the FCO (Foreign and Commonwealth Office) in either Milton Keynes or London so an Apostille can be applied. This signifies that your document (usually an educational document) is recognised as legitimate by the UK Government, and involves attaching a stamp to the reverse of the document. The next stage is to take the documents to the UAE Embassy in London, where they’ll legalise the document, ready for use in the UAE.
Sounds simple enough doesn’t it? But it can get terribly complicated, not to mention expensive if you’re not careful.
For example, the FCO in London don’t accept non-business visitors, while the one in Milton Keynes only accepts documents via post. That could take days to process, not ideal if you’re in a rush. There’s also all the travelling you’d have to do – going back forth from city to city can get both time consuming and expensive.
